We’re proud to say, we have some of the BEST elite athletes in Team USANA. In the competitive world of sports, millimetres or milliseconds can decide whether a professional athlete is crowned the winner or loser.  Hence why supplementation is a popular subject as athletes strive to improve their performance and gain that competitive edge over their opponents.

In our last blog, we revealed three of the top 6 supplements taken by elite athletes: CellSentials ®, BiOmega™ and Vitamin D. The wait is over, it’s time for the big reveal! We hear from our Team USANA Kiwis: adventurer, Mike Allsop, New Zealand’s top Freestyle Snowboarder, Christy Prior, and para-cyclist Byron Raubenheimer, as well as World Number One Track & Field Aussie, Deon Kenzie.

4. Proflavanol C100

Do you remember playing sport as a kid and your parents would be on the side lines feeding you oranges during half time? Well, Vitamin C does have amazing benefits. It aids in repairing and regenerating tissues, protects you against heart disease, assists in the absorption of iron and decrease your “bad” cholesterol.

Supplementation of vitamin C was found to improve components of the human immune system such as antimicrobial and natural killer cell activities and lymphocyte proliferation. Vitamin C contributes to maintaining the integrity of cells and protects them against reactive oxygen species generated during the respiratory burst and in the inflammatory response Proflavanol® C100 provides superior antioxidant protection with a synergistic blend of grape seed extract and Poly C™.

The two layers of grape seed extract and Poly C are distinctly visible in ProflavanolC100. This technology also supports product stability. This technology is proprietary to the pharmaceutical industry, but USANA is the first nutritional supplement manufacturer to use this technology, to the best of our knowledge.

Proflavanol C100 is one of my favourite USANA supplements. I use it all the time in my daily routine. There are times during my adventures at high altitude that I can physically feel the effects of taking it and have seen the difference it makes with people I am travelling with as well. It helps me keep a healthy immune function, which is critical on any adventure.”

Mike Allsop, USANA Adventurer.

“Naturally as athletes, we’re on a never ending quest to get stronger, faster and fitter! In the last few months I’ve found that I train and perform better when I feel like I am playing catch up with the rest of the world in my class. I push myself to train harder and longer to get to where I need to be. Having undergone two major surgeries this year and being set back to what seems like square one, I am in that mind set of catching up. I’m so fortunate to have the support of USANA and Proflavanol C100 to keep my immune system at 110%, keep me on the bike and get me back to where I need to be to compete against the best in the world.”

Byron Raubenheimer, New Zealand Para-cyclist

“We never know what’s around the corner and we expect a lot out of our bodies in this day and age, so for me, keeping my immune system in tip top shape is one of my highest priorities. Proflavanol C 100 is packed with powerful antioxidants and is a staple for me while I’m travelling around on the Pro Tour, not to mention, it’s a huge help with my recovery and energy levels to meet the demands of my lifestyle. A must-have for anyone looking for that extra oomph!”

5. CoQuinone 100

Coenzyme Q10 powers athletic performance. When athletes train, their bodies re on a high demand schedule, they are required to perform better and better each time. Intense training means the bodies Coenzyme is rapidly decrease and the body is aching for more Coq10! Also, as we age, the ability to absorb and synthesise CoQ10 diminishes and the amount of CoQ10 retained in tissues decreases.

USANA’s commitment to quality, using only the best ingredients in the right amounts and proper formulations for optimal bioavailability, can be seen at its best in CoQuinone 100™CoQuinone 100 contains a full 100mg of CoQ10 and 40mg of alpha lipoic acid per capsule. USANA’s unique formulation provides these important antioxidants in a natural mixture of lecithin and vegetable-derived glycerin monooleate in a base of medium chain triglycerides.

“I take CoQuinone100 every day. It supports my cardiovascular health and is a powerful anti-oxidant. I am also aware that as we age our bodies produce less CoQ10. So, CoQuinone 100 is imperative to ensure I have optimal health.”

Mike Allsop.

“I train 6 days a week, work as a building apprentice 5 days a week, study 3 days a week… And I know about it if I miss a day taking my Coquinone 100! Trying to find that extra few watts in a training session after a day on a building site is made a lot easier with the boost of CoQ10!”

Byron Raubenheimer.

6. Procosamine

Avoid chronic joint injuries and maintaining healthy joints is crucial for athletes of all stages and ages. Nothing can disrupt an athletes training ability as much as lingering joint injuries.

USANA’s Procosamine® helps to reduce joint inflammation, reduce swelling and increase joint mobility associated with arthritis not just because of the glucosamine it contains, but also due to its added blend of key joint-supporting minerals.

Meriva Bioavailable Curcumin. Curcuminoids in turmeric (the bright yellow spice that gives a golden glow to Indian curries and curry powder) contains potent anti-inflammatory antioxidants. Traditional curcumin from turmeric isn’t absorbed well (isn’t able to enter cells easily). So, in order to deliver any real benefits, you would have to consume very large amounts. Scientists suggest around 10 grams (around two teaspoons) daily to achieve blood concentrations that correspond to pre-clinical studies. USANA’s Procosamine contains patented Meriva®Bioavailable Curcumin to enhance curcumin’s health benefits. The curcunin is wrapped in a protective lecithin (fatty substance) layer which helps to prevent it from breaking down in the stomach allowing for better absorption in the small intestine. The Meriva Curcumin complex allows for 29-times better absorption than standard forms of curcumin.

“For me, good nutrition is the key to me performing at my best and when I don’t have it, I know I cannot perform at my optimum.  USANA’s Procosamine has played such an important role in my growth and development as an athlete over the past few years really allowing me to train consistently without getting sick or run down.”

Elite athletes rely on their body to perform at it’s peak. They train hard, follow a nutrition plan, and push themselves to the limit. They eat, sleep and drink to win. Our Team USANA athletes trust us to supplement their extraordinary lifestyles with top-of-the-line nutritional supplements. So this brings us to the question… Do athletes really need nutritional supplements? Do I?

Do Athletes Really Need to Take Supplements?

One question that commonly arises is, “If I eat a healthy diet, do I still need to take supplements?”. Let it be clearly indicated that a healthy diet is an essential foundation for any program of optimal nutrition.  Realistically there is no substitute for eating healthy. In this perspective, USANA’s nutritional supplements are designed and calculated to complement a healthy diet rather than a replacement. USANA supplements are designed to provide advanced levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are challenging to gain from diet alone – levels that individuals can use every day to promote a lifetime of good health.

Secondly, inadequate vitamin levels may result in poor athletic performances. Athletes deficient in B-vitamins may perform worse during high-intensity exercise and have less ability to repair and build muscle than individuals with nutrient-rich diets. B vitamins, including thiamine, riboflavin, B6, B12, and folate, are required by the body for proper conversion of proteins and sugars into energy. B vitamins are also utilised during the production and repair of cells, including red blood cells.

In a US study (Woolf & Manore 2006Even a marginal deficiency in these nutrients negatively influenced the ability of the athletes’ bodies to repair, operate efficiently, and fight disease. Exercise-induced stress, changes in body tissues resulting from training, increased loss of nutrients (in sweat, urine, and faeces), and the additional nutrients needed to repair and maintain higher levels of lean tissue mass may all affect an individual’s B-vitamin requirements.

Have you noticed that your knees have been giving you a bit of grief lately? The exact science behind winter-related joint aches is up in the air, but there’s no doubt that joint pain can get triggered from changes in temperature. The best way to care for your joints is to keep you muscles, ligaments and bones healthy!

How can you keep your joints happy in the cold season?

Dress Warmly

Warm clothing for joint health

Layering up is crucial! The cold can make your muscles tense and stiff, leaving you prone to injury. Keep you head, hands and feet warm, as the majority of heat is lost through extremities. It’s a good idea to layer up when you’re exercising too, so you can stay comfortable and peel them off as you heat up.

Tweak Your Workout

Pain is your bodies warning, so take care when you’re exercising. That isn’t permission to quit exercising in winter though! Exercise can actually help keep your joints supple. Not only that, but maintaining a healthy weight is key for joint and bone health.

It’s a good idea to stretch and warm up with a walk or light jog before you start working out to prevent injuring yourself or aggravating your joints.

Adapt your workout by going indoors and keeping warmer. Head to the gym, or even use a heated pool to warm up your muscles.

Healthy diet for Healthy Joints

Omega 3 for joint health

It comes as no surprise that nutrition can help with your health, but there are certain foods which are particularly good for joint health. Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines are high in omega 3 fatty acids, which can help with joint inflammation. Keep your bones strong to support your joints with calcium rich foods such as yoghurt, milk and leafy greens.

Three Important Supplements for Joints

It can be hard to get the recommended amount of nutrients into your diet every day. That’s where supplementation comes in! Here are three essentials for your joints:

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

biomega for joint health

Numerous studies have shown fish oil to be effective in maintaining and supporting healthy joints and articular cartilage, assisting in joint comfort and supporting bone health1.

It has been linked with having anti-inflammatory effects, which could help with inflammation of the cushioning pads around joints2.

USANA’ BiOmega is also fortified with Vitamin D, which is important for keeping joints and bones strong, and preventing bone diseases like osteoporosis3!

Procosamine

procosamine joint health

USANA have a unique supplement which is specially designed for joint-support! It assists in reducing joint inflammation, increasing mobility, and managing osteoporosis and arthritis*.

Not only is it one of the few vegetarian formulas available on the market, the addition of vitamin C makes Procosamine a highly effective, comprehensive approach to joint health. Plus, it has a unique InCelligence® Joint-Support Complex.

MagneCal D – Magnesium, Calcium and Vitamin D

magnecal d joint health

These are the essential building blocks for healthy joints and bones. Lucky for you, MagneCal D has the perfect balance of magnesium, calcium and vitamin D to support your bones, joints and more.

You probably already know that calcium is important for bone health, right? As I already mentioned, your bone and muscle health is important in keeping your joints healthy. Calcium is continually removed from and redeposited in the bones, so adequate levels are needed every day to ensure that bone mineral density is maintained. Not only that, but calcium deficiency can increase the risk of osteoporosis.

Magnesium helps your body absorb calcium and supports muscle strength, which can help with joint stability.

Vitamin D supports healthy muscle function, maintaining healthy bones and absorbing calcium, which supports your joints!
