You do all the right things to stay healthy and fit. You eat nutritious food, exercise, and take your vitamins. Despite your efforts, you’re just not losing weight. Many of us enjoy a glass of wine or ice-cold beer with dinner, or even a few beverages on the weekend. But could alcohol be the culprit for your weight moving in the wrong direction? Now we don’t want to sound like your mum, but perhaps you really should consider drinking less.

Alcoholic drink

Alcohol and Weight Loss

Many of us enjoy a drink or two. But when you’re trying to lose weight, you may find that it’s best if you lay off it completely – or stick to just one drink per day.

That’s because alcohol is loaded with calories. At seven calories per gram, it’s second only to fat (which provides nine calories per gram).

Plus, when you add in the mixers/juices, the calorie load rises even higher. Another reason that alcohol can crank up the kilos is that it’s easy to drink a lot of it without it affecting your body’s satiety system. So, the calories can pile up and up. Then, the dehydrating effects of alcohol increase your blood pressure and slow down your metabolism. But, where your weight is concerned, there’s even more bad news…

When your body detects alcohol, it responds to the introduction of what is essentially a toxin by switching from fat metabolism in order to focus on getting rid of alcohol from your body. So instead of breaking down fats, not just the fats you’ve just eaten but the fats in your body, it concentrates on ridding itself of alcohol.

Putting the brakes on fat breakdown

One small study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition involved eight men who drank two units of vodka and sugar-free lemonade. Each drink contained just under 90 calories. Fat metabolism was measured before and after drinking and then for several hours afterwards. Results showed that fat oxidation in the whole body (a measure of how much fat the body is burning) dropped by a massive 73 per cent!

Incoming fat… So, while your body puts the brakes on breaking down fats that are already in your system, alcohol is also notorious for weakening your willpower especially for fatty, salty snacks (kebab anyone?). The slowed-down fat metabolism combined with incoming fat means that it’s easy to store fat in your body and in particular, around your liver and centrally around your body. Hence the infamous beer belly.

Beer belly AKA central obesity

This kind of central obesity or apple shape raises your risk for raised blood fats, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and developing Type 2 diabetes. Studies suggest that people eat food containing around 20% more calories than normal whilst drinking alcohol either because it interferes with your body’s ability to feel full or perhaps due to sheer will power weakening effects. The kind of fat around your middle is also metabolically active – it is located deep inside your body and is wrapped around your internal organs. Plus, this type of fat may hinder the work of your pancreas (which secretes insulin) and liver (which detoxifies and cleans your body).

kermit-1651325_960_720Are you a weekend binger?

And, if you’re one of those people who is careful with alcoholic drinks during the week but lets it all happen on the weekend, you could be downing thousands of calories without knowing about it! That cheeky glass of wine after work which turns into a couple and the drinks with dinner can add up! Unless you add up exactly what you drink (and eat) into a journal, you won’t have an accurate idea of what you’re consuming (try easydietdiary.com or myfitnesspal.com).

Seeing the calorie counts linked with drinks (just as more and more restaurants are doing for foods) – and the exercise that you’d have to do to work them off – may help to make us more aware.

Tips on controlling alcohol intake:

  • Alternate sugar-free soft drinks or water with an alcoholic one
  • Go for light versions where possible
  •  Water down wine with sparkling water or diet lemonade for a refreshing spritzer
  • Never eat without having food in your stomach
  • Keep water available to quench your thirst while you drink alcoholic drinks.

A standard drink explained

1 standard drink = 10g alcohol which is equivalent to:

  • 100ml of table wine
  • 30ml of spirits
  • 250ml of beer

But one drink isn’t always just one drink!

  • An average restaurant serve of wine of 180ml 12% Alc./Vol = 1.8 drinks
  • A 375ml can of full strength beer 4.9%Alc./Vol = 1.5 drinks
  • A 375ml can of pre-mix spirits 5%Alc./Vol = 1.5 drinks Check the label to find out how many standard drinks in your serve.

Are you changing your attitude towards alcohol?

Women in particular should pay more attention to alcohol consumption because women are generally smaller than men and naturally have a smaller liver which doesn’t process and detoxify alcohol to the same extent.

Once you’re at your healthy weight range, go ahead and treat yourself every so often. But try not to overdo it.

While it’s all good fun to go and have some beers with your mates, just remember that alcohol could be the culprit behind not achieving your weight goals. I’m sure we’re all aware that it’s just not that great for our overall health. Que flash back to that really bad hang over. So, just remember everything in moderation! Hope you all have a great weekend!

Cheers!

You know the saying – don’t judge a book by its cover. Although our appearance often reflects our health, we can’t always judge our health purely on looks or weight. You may be lucky enough to be skinny even if you aren’t exercising enough or eating well. However, this doesn’t mean that you have a healthy level of fat on your body. Beware of the skinny fat.

woman-caught-eating-donuts-6190817_xlPeople are generally under the assumption that being skinny is healthy. Yes, being in the right weight range makes us less predisposed to disease, but in order to determine the true healthiness of a person we have to pay more attention to our body fat percentage. The misconception that being skinny is healthy leads to the development of degenerative diseases that could’ve been otherwise prevented.

Those love handles by your sides are a good indication that you’re not as healthy as you ought to be. Being “skinny fat” can have a huge impact on your life and health if you’re not careful. People who are skinny can still suffer from digestive health problems too. Skinny fat describes a person who is in a healthy weight range but has more body fat than is healthy.

It is also termed Metabolically Obese Normal Weight (MONW). It relates to the way fat tissue is carried in the body. And, whether the body fat is visible or is invisible (i.e. located deep inside you coating vital organs such as the heart, kidneys, liver and pancreas). Too much body fat (especially belly fat) causes metabolic changes such as inflammation. That’s because visceral fat, the fat stored deep inside you is metabolically active, triggering inflammation which stops blood from flowing freely.

Essentially skinny fat happens when you carry too much fat and not enough muscle.

A staggering one in four people with MONW have pre-diabetes according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association and you may be affected if:

• You have a waist measurement of greater than 94cm for men or 80cm for women. Belly fat is an indicator of internal fat deposits, which can coat the internal organs, and increase the risk of chronic disease.

• You have an abnormal blood cholesterol profile i.e. if you have high triglycerides, especially with a low HDL- or good cholesterol.

• Your blood sugar is consistently higher than normal range and/or if you are diabetic and your blood glucose is not well controlled.

• You have insulin resistance. This is when insulin is being produced but cannot take blood glucose into the cells in order to keep blood glucose levels to within the normal range. Too much circulating insulin prevents the breakdown of fat in body cells and encourages the production of more fat from the excess circulating glucose.

• You have an abnormal liver function test. This can be an early indicator of excess fat in the liver. Your doctor will discuss this with you.

What you can do?

• Cut down on sugary carbohydrates and white bread, pasta and foods made from white flour.

• Choose low GI carbohydrates (Nutrimeal and USANA Snacks are both ultra-low GI).

• Ditch soft drinks (including juices).

• Moderate alcohol (is also converted into triglycerides and stored in the liver and around the belly).

• Try cereals like quinoa and amaranth which contain more protein and fewer carbs.

amaranth-1112988_960_720

• Boost your aerobic exercise to cut down fat stores and increase strength training.

Another great idea is to try a liver lovin’ cleanse with USANA’s HepaPlus supplement, which contains numerous ingredients including milk thistle extract and alpha lipoic acid to support healthy liver function. Alpha lipoic acid is a naturally occurring antioxidant that helps neutralise free radicals. Most antioxidants are either soluble in fat or water so they can’t access every part of every cell. However, alpha lipoic acid is able to enter both the fatty and aqueous (water-based) sections of the cell, boosting its ability to trap free radicals wherever they are.

HepaPlus contains choline, a substance which helps to emulsify (break down) fats. This helps them to be removed from the liver. Food sources of choline include eggs, beef, salmon, wheat germ and broccoli. All of these ingredients not only help cleanse and remove fat in liver but they also help regenerate cells.

Remember, true health comes from within so you need to pay more attention to what you can’t see rather than what you can see. A good starting point would be trying to get rid of that belly fat by fitting exercise into your everyday routine and paying more attention to what you eat.

While many of us strive to be thin and beautiful, health is what is most important. Don’t focus so much on the scales, but striving to live a healthy life. What are you waiting for?

Vitamin supplements should not replace a balanced diet. Use only as directed. Always read the label

This morning I got up bright and early and dragged myself to a 6am class at the gym before work… and I felt amazing! Sure, I wasn’t overly excited about getting out of bed early, but once I was there I felt really good. I started my day with tonnes of energy and a great mood! Usually I try to get some exercise in the afternoons, but I think I’ve been converted to a morning exercise person. So I’ve decided to put together 10 reasons why you should work out in the morning too!

  • You’re less likely to skip it for other obligations. I don’t know about you, but my friends don’t tend to invite me out at 6am… ever. So your workout won’t be taking a back seat. Plus, you won’t have chores like making dinner getting in the way of your workout!
  • You’ll set a happy and healthy tone for the day. The endorphins you get from your workout boost your energy and mood. Plus you’re less likely to eat junk food if you’re in a healthy state of mind. For many people it regulates their appetite for the day. You’ll usually want to refuel with good food!
  • You’ll feel less stressed at work. Studies show that people who exercise regularly feel more empowered and better about their work-life balance.

burnout-384083_960_720

  • You’ll have nothing to dread the rest of the day. You won’t go home thinking oh boy, I have to work out as well as a million other things!
  • You’ll have a better hair day. Yes, that’s right! Instead of having bed hair, you’ll have clean, just styled hair at the start of your day!!
  • You’ll give your metabolism a boost.  Exercising in the morning jump starts your metabolism, so you burn more calories throughout the day.
  • You’ll have more time to socialise. As I said in the first point, your friends aren’t likely to invite you for a catch up at 6am. If you get it out of the way in the morning, you’ll have time to go out for a few drinks with everyone after work! And before you ask, no, it’s not a good idea to work out after you’ve had a few wines.
  • You’ll be able to focus better. Research has shown that exercise increases mental acuity. On average it lasts four to ten hours after exercise! To think of all that brain power you’ve wasted working out after work! Plus, most people aren’t awake, so you’ll be able to focus more on the actual exercise without all the notifications from messages, tweets, Facebook updates, Snapchats… The list goes on.
  • Less crowded. Usually the gym isn’t as crowded early in the morning, so you won’t have to fight some lady for the treadmill today.
  • pug-1210025_960_720It’s easier to wake up. If you wake up and exercise at the same time every morning, your body gets used to the routine. Your endocrine system and circadian rhythms adjust to the regular waking up and exercising times. Your metabolism and hormones involved in exercise begin to elevate while youre sleeping, so when you wake up you’ll feel more energized and alert.

So, are you convinced to work out in the mornings yet? I know you’re probably thinking that there is nothing worse than waking up before 6am to exercise, but honestly try it out for yourself before you knock it!

What is the trick to being as innovative as us? Having the most talented and cutting-edge team! USANA’s two decades has been filled with revolutionary changes in nutritional science, and that’s not about to change! We are about to progress into a new era of science. We’ve been sworn to secrecy, but it’s all coming out on August 25th… You’re in for a surprise!

It started in 1992 with the USANA® Essentials™—antioxidants in optimal doses—and continues to Olivol® and self-preserving skin care and Nutritional Hybrid Technology and the True Health Assessment and USANA MySmart™Foods. And we’re missing almost as many as we listed.

Who are the people behind USANA’s expertise:

Kevin Spelman

The PhD that follows Kevin Spelman’s name already says a lot. Those three letters represent a rarified level of knowledge. But painting a full picture of the expertise of USANA’s executive vice president of research and development requires much more.

Kevin Spelman, PhD, post-doctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health, Marie Curie fellow in the European Union, former advisor to the White House Commission of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, publisher of 27 scientific papers, and 30-year veteran of the natural-products industry.

We sat down with Dr. Spelman to find out more about him, the amazing team of scientists at USANA, and what innovation means to him.

When did you know you wanted to be a scientist?

Early on, as a young child. I can’t give you an age. I was always interested in the way things worked. I was especially interested in biology, the wonderment of life. This sometimes got me in trouble with my parents. I once built an ant farm in the bathtub when I was quite young.

What was it about biology that sparked some inspiration for you?

Life is juicy. For me, chemistry was fascinating, but too dry. Biology gave chemistry meaning to me. I’m just fascinated by life, whether it’s social structures, the xenohormetic physiological cues from our surrounding environment, the molecular pathways of our bodies’ web of life, or the network nature of ecology. I’m fascinated by all of it, particularly on a molecular level. I tend to think on a molecular level, as well as from the 30,000-foot view.

Why did you want to focus on nutrition?

My own health, actually. I was frequently ill as a child. In my early 20s, I started really getting interested in what type of foods I was eating and the impact it was having on me. It made a huge difference in my health and made me understand that there was much more to health than what our medical community knew.

You have so much amazing experience. What made you choose USANA?

Honestly, Dr. Wentz. Seeing that USANA really is based in science—and everybody says that—but USANA really came from a scientist’s conception of wanting to improve human health. After hearing Dr. Wentz’ story, he won me over.

Blog images-theme1-3 (NZ)What do you think sets USANA apart scientifically?

The quality of our R&D team. We have some very thoughtful and critically thinking scientists in the R&D department that really want the very best for every product that goes out. I’ve been in natural products for 30 years. It is unfortunate that R&D teams are more than occasionally an illusory part of supplement companies. Our R&D team is real, hardcore, and well-funded. We spend a lot of resources getting everything just right. The fact that we have pharmaceutical-grade GMPs was another thing that won me over. I thought to myself, “USANA is really serious about their quality control.” Our QC is just spot-on in terms of pharmaceutical GMPs. I think those are the things that really set us apart.

Why is it so important to ground our products in scientific research and not just chase trends?

We’re not a member of the molecule of the month club. We want something real. We want something that’s going to last. We want something that’s really going to improve people’s health over long-term use. Trends often don’t do that.

Rachel A. Brewer, PhD, senior scientist specializing in microbiome research

How did you start to add to the R&D team?

We started with a preexisting base of excellent scientists, so that was an important piece. Then we hunted for the brightest minds we could find. Since we already had a good foundation with some highly experienced and intelligent scientists, and then we added a microbiome expert to our R&D team, we have generated an extraordinary and exciting innovative potential.

What does Dr. Wentz’ vision mean to you?

It means that he’s really got his heart and his mind in the right place. He was innovative early on, in a way that nobody else was, and he took a chance, a risk, and it turned out to be the right thing to do. I think that’s one of the things I keep having to remind myself and the team is that we have to push our comfort level. Innovation is stepping into the unknown. We are not interested in “me too” products.

Why is innovation so important to you and to USANA?

I think because our Associates see that we are leading the way in nutritional science and they expect that. And the only way we’re going to continue to lead the way is to be innovative and to step into uncharted territory. It is my goal that USANA continues to disrupt the natural products industry by putting out novel products based on cutting-edge research in the nutritional sciences. We have everything in place to be 15 strides ahead of our competition.

Continuing the Legacy

It’s time to lengthen that timeline, because we aren’t done innovating.

We really just can’t help ourselves. Right now, in a building on the west side of Salt Lake City, another major evolution is in the works. And it’s a big one.

Do we know what it is? Sure we do. Have we been sworn to secrecy about it? You could say that. But we can tell you when it will be unveiled: August 25, 2016, at the USANA International Convention. See you there!

Revolutionary. Pioneer. Visionary. Words reserved for the bold, innovative and passionate. They describe a man who stepped into the unknown and through bold innovation and impassioned vision, shed light on an entirely new path to health.

Dr. Myron Wentz. Synonymous with scientific brilliance and the kind of disruptive innovation that accelerates the sluggish pace of science—and changes the lives of millions in the process.

Dr Wentz’ Vision

You aren’t born with the passion and vision required to alter the world. If only it were that simple. The creation of monumental change comes at monumental cost, too often paid in the currency of personal tragedy.

At 17, Dr. Wentz lost his father to heart disease. He was the first of many family members taken too soon by degenerative disease. These traumatic events forced a talented young musician named Myron Wentz to look for solutions in his other love—science.

Over the course of his life, these losses galvanised into a purpose-driven vision to improve the health of people all over the world, to save them from living too short and dying too long.

And that vision has made possible the long list of innovations and accomplishments listed next to Dr. Wentz’ name: internationally recognized microbiologist, pioneer in the development of human cell culture technology, developer of the first commercially available diagnostic test for the Epstein-Barr virus, and winner of the Albert Einstein Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Life Sciences.

If you want to be the first to know about the biggest innovative changes happening in USANA, register for the 2016 International Convention today! We’re excited about what the future holds and can’t wait to share it with you.

Whole foods are foods that are closest to their natural state and that means they give us more nutrients than highly refined foods. They are often made up of grains, nuts, seeds, beans, and legumes.

Whole foods contain a wide variety of nutrients in one food. These nutrients include phytonutrients, essential fatty acids and fibre. Whole foods are also rich in essential vitamins, minerals that cannot be synthesised in the body and therefore have to be obtained through diet.

Some of the benefits you will see from eating more whole foods include:

Better Digestion: Whole foods are high in fibre which is an essential nutrient for healthy digestion, and heart health combined. Whole foods are full of natural insoluble and soluble fiber to support digestion and regularity, along with keep you full.

You might be surprised to know that this isn’t always the case. Some saturated fats, such as the naturally occurring saturated fats found in coconut oil, are actually good for you.

This is why USANA’s MySmart™Bars are a great way to get the nutrition you need. These delicious foods contain coconut oil, an excellent source of naturally occurring saturated fats, and contain a beneficial balance of other macronutrients to fuel your body and leave you feeling satisfied.

Coconut Oil: MySmart™ Choice!

Not all fats are created equal. Coconut oil is primarily made up of medium-chain triacylglycerols (MCTs). These types of fatty acids are processed differently by the body than its cousin the long-chain triacylglycerols (LCTs), which are found primarily in animal foods (saturated fat). Coconut oil doesn’t seem to raise your cholesterol and is more likely to be burned as energy than stored as blubber. Why? Because MCTs are oxidised to a greater degree and more efficiently than are LCTs, and have less of an opportunity for deposition into adipose (fatty) tissue.

A fat that doesn’t make you fat. Consumption of MCT’s from coconut oil has been shown to increase metabolism through an increase in thermogenesis. Thermogenesis is the body’s ability to produce heat which therefore allows the body to utilise more energy.

Coconut oil can be used as a tool in weight reduction. An increase in metabolism and energy utilisation means the body burns more fuel, ie. fat. This demonstrates coconut oil’s utility as a novel weight reduction tool. A study of 30 men in the journal Pharmacology found that just 2 tablespoons per day reduced waist circumference by an average of 1.1 inches over the course of a month.

Coconut oil keeps you fuller for longer. Feeling full is another benefit of consuming coconut oil, this also adds to the oil’s ability to help reduce weight.

How to get more coconut oil into your diet

Besides eating our MySmart™Bars, there are heaps of ways you can use coconut oil. Try adding it your coffees, salad dressing and use it when baking. At roughly 117 calories per tablespoon, coconut oil is a near identical caloric swap for olive oil. It also has a high smoke point makes coconut oil great for just about every dish, from eggs to stir-frys.

It’s a fat that can help you lose weight, get a smaller waist line, plus it keeps you fuller for longer. What more could you want!
